Te whakatakoto i te tāhuhu

During 2015 and 2016, we asked our stakeholders about several challenges facing the library sector and New Zealand. The questions focused on how to enable New Zealanders to access knowledge and share it more easily; how to ensure that New Zealanders have the right skills and literacies to succeed; and how to ensure that we preserve the knowledge created for the future. Our stakeholders supported a strategic focus on these three areas along with many of the ideas we presented as solutions to these issues. Feedback also reinforced the need to work in partnership to achieve change for New Zealand.

We will foster a culture of research, innovation and professional development within and outside of the National Library to meet these challenges. Our staff will be equipped with the skills required for the National Library of New Zealand to be world leading. Our strategic directions will support the National Library’s aims for New Zealanders and also connect with wider outcomes such as strengthening our communities, ensuring people trust information and being fit-for-purpose in a digital age.

The National Library of New Zealand (Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa) Act 2003 sets out the purpose and function of the National Library (incorporating the Alexander Turnbull Library).

We work with communities to help people to fully participate in the cultural and economic life of New Zealand
