Series 3 - Papers relating to Maori history and culture

Reference
Series-2276
Description

Ngata was a major contributor to Maori scholarship and to efforts to revitalise Maori society through the promotion of knowledge about traditional culture. He was an active member of the Polynesian Society and was instrumental in forming the New Zealand Board of Ethnological Research. His own major work was `Nga Moteatea', a compendium of Maori song. Through the Maori Purposes Fund Board he launched a far reaching and effective programme for the promotion of Maori culture, including a programme for the building or restoring of traditional wharenui around the country. Although not a prolific writer himself he encouraged research into Maori history and culture and this series reflects his wide research interests in whatakauki, whakapapa, song, wharenui, tribal histories, religion and much else. It provides a variety of material, including lecture notes, research notes, a file relating to the setting up of the Board of Ethnological Research, reports, and correspondence. Researchers should be aware, however, that much of his correspondence and research notes, including his `Nga Moteatea' work, is part of a separate collection - the Maori Purposes Fund Board papers (MS-Papers-0189). Other material relating to these interests is in series 2.
