The New Zealand Mission was known as the Australasian Mission until 1841 when the Australian Mission was closed. Their record keeping ended in 1884 coinciding with the year that the organisation of the New Zealand Mission became a New Zealand responsibility.

Finding Aids: A detailed inventory is available supplemented by an AJCP Handbook, part 8, pp 23-24; Mander-Jones pp 90-92 and a "Catalogue of Papers of the Missions of Africa [Group Three], Vol. 7, New Zealand Mission, 1809-1914", compiled by the University of Birmingham Library..
Provenance: Microfilming was arranged by Michael Hitchings with CMS archivist, Rosemary Keen; carried out in 1959. It was later taken over and distributed as part of the Australian Joint Copying Project. The originals, in London at the CMS Archives at the time of filming, are now are held, along with all of the other CMS mission material, by the University of Birmingham Library.

Description: These are the general In letters to the CMS secretaries, and include letters from government departments and missionaries not on their stations, although there are one or two intruders in the latter case. First approaches to the CMS by propective missionaries are pretty well invariably to be found here. The letters were originally bound in volumes, but many of these are now broken down and the letters loose in boxes. The boxes are so far numbered up to C H /O )1850). Thereafter unnumbered volumes exist up to 1867. The remaining years up to 1864 seem to be missing Letters before April 1808, when Marsden first raised the question of a New Zealand Mission, were not searched Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s).
