Athlete, doctor. Runner who broke the world mile record in 1933, won the Empire Games gold medal in 1934, and broke the 1500 metres record in winning the Olympic gold medal at Berlin in 1936. Lovelock was born in Crushington, West Coast but later moved to South Canterbury. He attended Timaru Boys High School, Otago University, and Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship in 1931. For the next five years he dominated international mile and 1500 metres running, racing with rivals like Luigi Beccali of Italy, Bill Bonthron and Glen Cunningham of the USA and the Englishman Sydney Wooderson. He was an athletics sports journalist in the later 1930s. After his Olympic victory he retired from running and qualified as a doctor.
