Description: In a letter to his wife, Mary, Betts writes of shipping sheep, cattle and horses and the amount of water required by them (Jan 1844). In March he writes to her describing his journey first by ship and then across the North Island from Tauranga to Wellington. He sailed from Auckland to Great Barrier Island and Mercury Bay, landed at Tauranga and journeyed toward Rotorua meeting various Maori and missionaries. After spending some time at Rotorua he travelled to Piroua Plains near Ohaki and reached the Waikato River. The group then travelled to Taupo, Wanganui, the Kapiti Coast and Wellington. Betts then travelled on the 'Calypso' to Queen Charlotte Sound and Nelson and after drifting for a week between Cape Farewell and North Cape, reached Sydney in May. Betts describes in some detail the route travelled, Maori settlements, landscape and sights, trees, people they met including several missionaries, in Rotorua, Chapman, Richard Taylor in Wanganui and Octavius Hadfield on the Kapiti Coast.
