Description: Photographs from three expeditions in the Homer area, between the Upper Hollyford Valley and the Cleddau Valley, December 1943-January 1944; December 1944-January 1945; and the Homer Tunnel Museum Expedition in February 1946, all taken by John Tenison Salmon. Many of the photographs are landscapes, but others show native plants growing in the area. Two sequences show the damage caused by avalanches, one showing damage to bush and to a bridge in 1944; the others show damage from a major avalanche which buried the eastern portal of the Homer Tunnel which was under construction at the time (September 1945). Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. The last slide showing the Lindis Pass was taken by Neville Hatwell. This sheet shows parts of Christchurch including the Cathedral, Cathedral Square, the Avon River and the statue of Robert Falcon Scott; the Rakaia River; a signpost on the road to Mount Cook; Lake Pukaki; Mount Sefton from the road; the Hermitage hotel; views of Mount Cook from the Hermitage; a group of people looking up the glaciers in the Tasman valley; a mountain daisy and a Mount Cook lily; and the Lindis Pass. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand between 1958 and 1959, and his return voyage to England aboard the Corinthic. This sheet of slides has two sections. The first 6 images relate to his voyage home with views of Fort Nassau and Willemstad in Curacao, and distant views of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. The second section shows purchased slides of New Zealand. These include some from a set of Maori images and New Zealand plants produced by "Kiwi Colour Slides" and one of pohutukawa flowers taken by N. Hatwell. Subjects listed above. Slides on this sheet are numbered 699-722 with gaps for nos. 705, 707-709 which were removed for lectures on New Zealand when he returned home to England. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 705, 707-709), purchased slides showing a Maori poi dance, plaiting flax, Maori cloaks and a Maori carver for his representative collection on New Zealand used in a lecture series when he returned to England. Description: Alpine views in the South Island, many apparently taken by Marcel Kurz (according the the title on the box), though none have the name Kurz noted. However other photographers are named on the back of many of the photographs including Ebenezer Teichelmann (no. 1); W.D. Frazer (nos. 18-20, 48-58); H.O.F. (Herbert Otto Frind) (nos. 21-26, 40-45); Leslie Hinge (no. 47); H.E.L. Porter (nos. 59-65); Mrs P. Graham (Elizabeth Muriel Graham) (no. 66); C. Barker (no. 67); ? Lewthwaite (nos. 71-72, 75-76); and G.E. Mannering (nos. 77-81, 85-89). Nos. 1-11 show scenes on the route to Alex Knob, with the Franz Josef Glacier and the Divide at its head, and the Waiho Valley; nos. 27-39 are en route to, and views from, Torres Peak; and nos. 40-44 are views from Mt Thomson. Photograph number 47 shows seven guides with a coiled climbing rope and two crossed ice picks in front. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Arthur's Pass National Park, including numbers of views of the Otira Tunnel under construction, with interior and exterior views. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include H C Peart, A A Lee, [?] Manson, [?] Beck, T.C., John Pascoe, W D Frazer, [?] Barrett, and C Beken. From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Many of the images show groups of young people, none of whom are identified, taken circa 1925-1926. (See article at http://www/nzine.co.nz/features/wak.html) Many of the images show winter views including icicles formed on waterfalls, frozen spray on twigs, and one with frozen spume near the Otira Tunnel. Image no. 25 shows an undentified woman standing at the foot of a semi-frozen waterfall, and image no. 64 shows an undentified woman wearing a woollen coat with fur collar and a felt hat, looking at icicles in Arthur's Pass. Image no. 43 shows "The Birches" in winter, near the summit of Arthur's pass on the Bealey side. Image no. 65 shows four women and a men with armfuls of mountain lilies in Arthur's pass. Images no. 70-71 show a small ferry [?] by the pier at Lake Brunner. Image no. 89 shows three men and a dog standing near a mountain hut, with a camera on a tripod.
