Description: A notebook and a published book relating to World War Two. One is Eric Blow’s notebook from his time at Aldershot, inscribed with “School of Artillery, Larkhill, Anti tank Course, 22.1.40 – 3.2.40. Notes of Lectures, T.E.W.T’s and Drills”. Interleaved at the back is a fold-out hand drawn set of “Desert signals” showing military arm signals. The other is a published photographic album entitled “3 D.S.K. w Italii: album fotograficzny, cz. II”, dated 1945. It depicts the campaign in Italy and features the Polish 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division (in Polish - 3 Dywizja Strzelców Karpackich or 3 D.S.K.). The text is in Italian, English and Polish. Description: Nine photographs attached to a sheet of paper with captions handwritten underneath each picture. The photographer is unidentified. Also attached is a photograph of a rugby game, cut out from a magazine. The photographs depict groups of soldiers at train stations, playing sports, on transport trains, and by tents in the desert. The heading reads “Battery Album” and captions include “Maadi tent dwellers”, “Sports day in the Western Desert”, “Half time at O.C.T.U.game at Aldershot” and “a halt on the journey through France”. Description: Photographs of plays and musical festivals put on at Oflag VII B prison of war camp in Germany with men playing male and female roles. The plays were: Post Mortem in 1943 (names given: Woodley, Jumbo Burrows, Malcolm Fry, Bob Armstrong, Quartermaine, N Jardine-Paterson); Case of the Frightened Lady in 1943; Dossing Dulcie, a medieval Christmas pantomime in 1943 (additional names: A Barradale-Smith, Don Olliver, Lutner, Stan Nolan (NZ), J Long, G Powell; Gaslight in 1943; French without Tears in 1944; I Killed the Count in 1944; and Hamlet (Michael Goodliffe as Hamlet who went on to act with the BBC). There was also a musical festival in 1944 in which the men took part in a full choir and orchestra and in 1945 in which New Zealand troops dressed as Maori (names given: Ready, Herewinie and Bennet). Also included are a photograph of a Christmas 1944 greetings card drawn by a cartoonist calling himself Blow (possibly as a pun on Low) in which a soldier is knitting and the wool is forming the words "this year next year sometime; a Christmas 1941 greetings card by A A West from Oflag VII C showing life in the camp; soldiers at Aldershot in 1941 the names given being Duff, Freyburg, Williams, Hill, Lowndes, Colonel Fraser and Captain Thornton; and a boxing match, one of the participants being Milner, the son of a Waitaki headmaster. A number of the photographs had been sent as postcards to Cowie's wife in Lower Hutt though with no message other than sender. The photographs are all stamped Oflag VII B gepruft (examined). Description: This collection documents significant aspects of the life of Eric Blow from 1920 to the 1960s. It features his artwork, notably a sketchbook of drawings satirising life as a prisoner of war during World War Two and a series of caricatures of rugby players. Other artwork includes a design for the Mid-Northern Rugby Football Club. Includes printed material related to his wartime training and service, including wartime maps of Europe, the journal ‘Touchstone’ published from a German Oflag (prisoner of war camp), and a photographic book of the Polish 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division in Italy. Also includes Blow’s own notebook from an anti-tank training course in 1940. Includes an arm band from the New Zealand Ex Prisoners of War Association, two Christmas cards from Oxford University and New Zealand Anti-Tank Battery, and a letter to the editor Blow wrote in 1946 defended the Fernleaf Club which supported military personnel in London. The photographs are of Eric Blow, family, friends, and colleagues taken 1920s-1960s by unidentified photographer/s. The images depict Eric's life long interest in rubgy as a player and administrator, and his service in World War Two with the New Zealand Anti-Tank Battery, formed in Aldershot in 1939. Many of these are official group shots. The snapshots of family and friends are probably post-war. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Delivered to the Library in various envelopes and no particular order. During World War Two Eric Blow joined the New Zealand Anti-Tank Battery at Aldershot, England. He served in Egypt and Greece. He was wounded then captured in Athens and spent time as a prisoner of war in Germany. He drew cartoons and caricatures, notably of rugby players and soldiers. Back in New Zealand he was a member of the New Zealand Ex Prisoner of War Association and worked as a teacher in Whangarei. He had a long-term interest in rugby as a player, referee and administrator.
