Description: Interview with Keith McLeod born 1950 in Christchurch. Talks about early childhood experiences with cycling. Describes becoming interested in mountain biking and building his own bike from parts in 1983. Discusses his obsession with mountain bikes, and how he would interrogate other mountain bikers he saw. Recalls various races in which he entered on his mountain bike, including the Karapoti Classic (1986 and 1989), also organising various mountain bike racing events in the Christchurch area. Discusses his experience of racing in the United States in 1988 at the World Championships. Discusses becoming involved in the bicycle trade industry in 1989. Initially working at Sam's Bike Shop in Christchurch and later opening his own bike stores in Christchurch including Chain Gang (March 1990), Bicycle Business, Catus Cycling and his current shop, Opawa Cycles (June 1997). Describes learning to become a bike mechanic and becoming a collector and restorer of old bikes. Talks about the bike trade in the late 1990s, and mentions sponsoring events such as the Taupo Day Nighter and Karapoti Classic, and riders including extreme unicyclist Ken Looi. Describes his participation in building racks at the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park. Talks about his attitude towards the changes to bicycling as a sport. In particular mentions the growth of recreational cycling, mountain biking, road cycling and drugs. Describes the changes in the bicycling industry and trade business. In particular mentions the effect of the Internet and bigger shops such as Penny Farthings on sales. Description: Interview with Don Worrall born 1938 in Auckland. Discusses the establishment of W.H. Worrall & Co. Ltd. in Auckland by his grandfather W.H. Worrall in the 1900s, and his father Aylmer "Spider" Worrall starting the bicycle importing side of the business. Mentions the bicycle industry boom of the 1950s and 1960s. Describes how they were the first business to get the Japanese to make them bicyles with English specifications, and how the anti-Japanese feelings after the war made them move the market to Taiwan and now China. Talks about how he became involved in the family business and the changes to the bicycle industry since then. Discusses various aspects of the industry in particular the government restrictions on licensing, tariffs and importing. Mentions the the change in the quality of parts since the 1970s, other bicycle importers including A. G. Healing, the change to recreational mountain biking in the 1980s and 1990s, how cycle racing kept the business running during the lean periods, taking on specialised agencies, and the impact of triatholons and internet sales on the bicycle industry. In particular discusses importing regulations and other licence holders such as Hope Gibbons, A.G. Healing and Company, James Brothers, W.H. Worrell, H.F. White, Tegal Smiths, Morrison and P.E. Clarkes. Describes working at Cyclemakers manufacturing business with Ian Hooker the manager of Healing and the idea to build their own bicycles in New Zealand factories. Discusses his experiences of the manufacturing industry, the tariffs and the effect of Rogernomics in the 1980s allowing dumped product into the New Zealand market. Mentions the popularity of various bicycles over the years. Describes leaving Cyclemakers in the 1990s and starting up Hi Tech/Reiker Cycles with financial backing from a German doctor called Ermen. Talks about his involvement in the New Zealand Cycle Traders' Federation (later Master Cycle Traders' Federation), his presidency and establishing a funding levy for advertising.
