Description: Photographs of roads, public and historic buildings, Wairakei hydro-electricity, and timber processing mills, taken circa 1970s to 1980s, by Margo Mitchell and some by other unidentified photographers. Twenty of the photographs have captions on the back, which discuss the image (including construction details for roads and buildings) and include camera and film used; these images are possibly from a portfolio as part of study. Ten of the photographs have no identifying details. Some of the name details in the captions are mis-spelt. Architect of Holy Trinity, Lyttleton named as Mr G Malliuser is Mr George Mallinson. Renunga Deviation should be Rununga Deviation. Donor worked as a photographer for the Ministry of Works. Quantity: 27 colour original photographic print(s). 3 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: Edward Lex Riddell, known as Lex, was born in Hamilton in 1925. Describes the history of the Woodlands Estate, founded in 1869 after the New Zealand Wars in Waikato. Talks about harvesting kauri gum and flax, Maori gardeners mixing soil with peat, the Woodlands Road built in 1952, the Maori canoe or waka and paddle found preserved in the swamp, power sourced from the water wheel, buried logs possibly from the Taupo eruption. Talks about the first estate manager at Eureka Hill in 1872, Henry Reynolds, describes his home, in Gordonton. Mentions the gardener Fred Forest and the 300 permanent and casual employees, and the food grown on the Estate. Talks about the creameries and cheese factories Reynolds established in the area. Talks about his butter factory in Cambridge where he used the North Island's first cream separator, and then exported butter to England under the Anchor brand. Explains origin of brand name. Mentions his cool store in London, and his directorship of the Dairy Association in 1896. Talks about John Gordon who managed Woodlands from 1885, and the subdivision of the estate into private ownership in 1905. Talks about Hikanui School, and the Estate's buildings, many of which were removed by the Riddell family. Talks about Irene Riddell leaving Woodlands Estate to Presbyterian Social Services (PSS) in her will for a retirement home, which was bought by the Waikato District Council, while the farm remained with the PSS. Describes the interior of the Woodlands home, which now has the historical purposes classification 'A'.
