Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Ink and pencil annotations on partly hand coloured map (incomplete - only part blue colour and some red for proposed roads). The pencil annotations add crosses (population) and accidental orange brush stroke indicate draft copy. Map is hand coloured to a key that reads: 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. No such settlements are identified around Wellington, Auckland, Napier or the East Coast north of Mahia. Quantity: 1 map(s). Description: Map is hand coloured and probably the manuscript to the later published editions. The key to the map (from later editions is) 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' However, this not written on this edition. The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. No such settlements are identified around Wellington, Auckland, Napier or the East Coast north of Mahia. Most populated areas are the East Cape, Whanganui River, Waikato district. Description: Map covers the Province of Taranaki and the top of the Wellington Province (shows the Tangarakau River, Makau River, Whanganui River) and up to Lake Taupo. Many rivers are named as well as many Maori placenames/?settlements. The map identifies the large landholdings of the settlers, eg Morrin and others, 100,000 acres, Morrin and others 46,000 acres, Birch's Run, Russell and Howard 40,000 acres, as well as "Okuhukura or Kopango 30,000 acres Walter and McDonnell". Shows "surveyed land 3,500 acres" and large tracks of "open country - not taken up". Shows large sections of "Totora Bush", "Kaimanawa", and "Te Kooti's Pa" next to the Waipara River near Mount Tongariro. Description: A collection of material collected and written by Leo Brickell on the early history of Māori and European settlers in Putāruru. Most of the material dates from the late 1940s to 1960s, and a single item is from 2022. The content covers Māori and European relations, intertribal warfare and the New Zealand Wars, the timber industry, dairy farming, and profiles of prominent people. The material includes inwards correspondence to Leo Brickell, research notes, newspaper clippings of published articles by Leo Brickell, three photographs and several hand drawn maps. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: The material was originally in a bundle including an unbound scrapbook with a loose cover board on top. Loose clippings and folders were interleaved between the cover and scrapbook and throughout the scrapbook. The original order has been maintained. Quantity: 6 folder(s). 3 b&w original photographic print(s). Processing information: The scrapbook and loose material were separated for conservation and storage reasons.

Description: Plan of Ruapekapeka Pa, belonging to Nga Puhi leader Te Ruki Kawiti, near the Kawakawa River, Bay of Islands. Shows Kawiti's house and pallisade, and several unnamed dwellings, ditches, embankments and gateways. A reference key identifies the destruction of sites by artillery within the Pa as well as the positions of the flagstaff and outworks, with explanatory notes to the left of the plan. Also shows four cross-section insets of parts of the Pa (vertical scale [1:120]: section through ditches and pallisades; section through a hut; section through bombproof holes; and a cross section of the pa site across the hillslope, including underground bunkers. The final diagram shows a section of the fence surrounding the pa, with accompanying notes.
