Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1890s-1900s. Most of the scenes are taken on a river boat trip up the Whanganui River, and include two of groups of Maori; one showing two nuns in full habit, walking behind three young Maori girls who are wearing ankle-length dresses. Some of the river scenes show stretches of the river, including several `on the rapids', and one of a group of men in a waka. Others are of the various villages passed on the trip, including one of the river boat tied up at Jerusalem, with a cart drawn by two horses alongside. One view shows the mouth of the Whanganui River at Patea, and from there the images are of the New Plymouth area, including Mount Taranaki (then Mount Egmont), the Sugar Loaves, the monument to Wiremu Tamati on the hill at Corbett Park (Oakura), and Opunake. Description: Polly Teki talks about her birth in 1908, attending Turakina Maori Girls' College in 1924 and being taken from school to live in Ranana by her father, who died in 1932 from pneumonic influenza. Speaks of her large family, doing a man's job and hard farm work. Mentions the riverboat Whakapai, its bar and items sold on board, the passengers. Refers to land being 'dry' - alcohol free. Talks of deckhands, Temo Ponga, Captains Anderson and Robinson, the riverboat accidents when Bob Gray and Captain Anderson died. Describes Pipiriki House, its dinners, concerts and why it burnt down. Mentions Ranana Post Office, the telephone exchange and mail transported by riverboat. Mentions the catholic nuns' work. Topics discussed include the opening of the road and the cessation of the boat service with some unemployment as a result. Description: Contains prints, some with captions, relating to the Ratana Church, taken by various photographers, circa 1930s-1970s Chiefly comprise of portraits including: a young unidentified Awhina, Tini Whetu Marama Tirikatene-Sullivan, Matiu Rata, Paraone Rewiti, Iriaka Ratana, Sir Eruera Tirikatene, Oli Nathan, Tiaki Omana, Pita Moko, Matiu Ratana, and Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana photographed in 1939. Also contains images of Te Temepara Tapu O Ihoa (interior and exterior), detail of the temple gateway (with text in maori and english), a tapestry depicting the pictorial history of the church hanging in the Church Office at Ratana Pa, Whare Maori museum interior, young Morehu at a 1958 [youth conference?] at Lake Rotoiti, and the opening ceremony of Te Manuao (with visitors including Reverend Colin Scrimgeour and Frank Langstone), and dancers Meretiana Niki Timiti, Te Oani Taiaroa, Rangiwhetu Hui, and Emma Pikimaui performing.
