Description: Photographs taken circa 1920s-1930s, collected, or taken by, Robert Kennett. Eleven taken at Waitangi (Northland), during an unidentified event at the treaty grounds (Waitangi Day celebrations?). These include views of Te Whare Runanga (meeting house), the harbour, and the endowment area. In addition, there are four images of waka (also at Waitangi?), including two of a tauihu (prow carving) and one of a tarapa (sternpost carving). Quantity: 15 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: Album made up of one letter and photographs taken by Pulman's Photographic Studio and other unidentified photographer(s) in the 1880s, compiled by Stephenson Percy Smith. Photographs show whakairo rākau, Māori wood carving, and some examples of carving in stone and bone. Many of the carvings photographed were owned by the Auckland dealer and collector Eric Craig, some of which are displayed in front of tapa, possibly from Tonga. Photographs include: - a Pākehā man, possibly Eric Craig dressed in a korowai and wearing a sign that reads: "Maori & Island Curios at Craig's Curiosity Shop. Princes St". - photograph of a tekoteko connected to Otaramarae . - taonga photographed in PA1-o-2072-04, PA1-o-2072-09-3 and PA1-o-2072-22 identified as being from Maketu; PA1-o-2072-32 from Maketu and Tuhoe. The album also contains inscriptions and a letter. The front endpapers are signed by Stephenson Percy Smith and pages 61 and 62 of the album contain traced outlines of hei tiki. Each drawing is annotated with selling information such as sold dates and some with location; Auckland Museum, Honolulu, Adelaide, London, Chicago. A one page letter was found interleaved within the front of the album. The letter contains illustrated research notes relating to taonga puoro, Māori musical instruments, addressed to Percy Smith from Augustus Hamilton, dated 4 September [19]00.
