Description: John McCaw was a leading clarinetist in London orchestras and spent 22 years as First Clarinet in the New Philharmonia in its great days under Klemperer, Muti and Sinopoli. Recalls playing in the framed RNZAF Band; in the National Orchestra and with Frank Gurr, another clarinetist, setting out from England in 1948. Recalls studying with Frederick Thurston, eventually becoming principal clarinet in the London Philharmonic under Edward van Beinum, another great conductor.
