Comprise a large commonplace book, writings on Christianity in Scotland, copies of letters on religious matters, a book of household accounts and an account of travel to Moffatt, Scotland, by Archibald Bonar The Bonar family papers were brought to New Zealand by James Alexander Bonar 1841-1901, who arrived in 1863, settled in Hokitika in 1865, and became the settlement's first mayor Quantity: 2 folder(s). 3 volume(s). 0.02 Linear Metres. Physical Description: Mss Provenance: James Alexander Bonar donated the three volumes to the Hokitika Public Library. Processing information: Despite the slightly differing circumstances of the donations of the papers, it has been decided to include them in the same MS-Group, as they originate with the same family.

Description: An illustrated record compiled by Robert Falconer for his wife Ann of his visit to Scotland and the Shetland Islands, 14 Sep 1903-1904. Ann was born at Lerwick, Shetland in 1846 and came to New Zealand the year before she married in 1870. The journal contains numerous photographs of family and friends, postcards, pictures, maps of Scotland and Shetland; in particular postcards of Edinburgh and Lerwick as well as other places on Shetland. Falconer has copied into the journal a tree showing the descendants of Bruce of Sumburgh from 1572 copied from public and private records. Also included (in back pocket of original volume) are several letters addressed to Alex Falconer from various correspondents, 1899-1904; book of panoramic views of Edinburgh taken from the tower of the North British Station Hotel, undated.
