He had been accepted as an apprentice at the age of seventeen by the shipping company Devitt and Moore to sail on the London to New Zealand run and return, 1875-1876 Includes introduction by Bob Molesworth which provides details about the Collingwood, ships' apprentices, the American evangelists Moody and Sankey, and biographical information about his grandfather. Appendix contains an edited transcript of Thomas Heath's narrative of the voyage written in verse, as well as stories of events that took place during the voyage. Description: Wilfred Ainslie Barlow, known as Bill, was born in Calcutta on 24.10.1929, an only child. Talks about Indian, British and New Zealand passports and arrival in New Zealand, October 1971. Mentions grandfathers. Talks of father's job in Licence Measures Dept. in shipping, while mother was a stenographer. Grew up with servants, brought up by friend with three children. Talks of father, a catholic until he became a Freemason, and mother was Anglican. Mentions that he was not compelled to go to church, but attended Victoria School, Kurseong, which was Anglican with other denominations present. Talks of uniform, religions and standard of education, attaining Senior Cambridge. Describes being an apprentice engineer and training opportunities, also the five years as an A Grade apprentice in Kharagpur with mainly Anglo-Indians, then going to sea. Discusses the loyalties of Anglo-Indians. Talks about his parents' families in India, his parents' illnesses and early deaths and the whereabouts of the friend which brought him up. Description: Alfred Saunders born at Point Halswell, Wellington 1911. Recalls his father was an artilleryman in the army, stationed at the Point to look after the large gun there. Talks about growing up on the Miramar Peninsula, Fort Ballance and other forts around the harbour. Also talks about period when father left the army and they moved to Whangaroa where his father took up crayfishing. Recalls leaving school at the age of 15 years and commencing an apprenticeship as a shipwright with B J L Jukes Ltd, a boatbuilder in Balena Bay, Wellington. Describes his duties as an apprentice and explains that many of the boats worked on at the yard belonged to Island Bay and Eastbourne fishermen. Mentions living at Paraparaumu where he built a 40 foot fishing vessel called `May' for a Mr Buckland at Plimmerton during the Great Depression. Refers to his work during World War II, describing some of the vessels he worked on which were commandeered by the navy. After the war went fishing from Paremata and details type of fishing and fish caught. Describes location of his boat yard at Paremata foreshore where he built a number of fishing and pleasure craft. Talks about the Sea Reaper, a vessel of 50 feet in length that he built and operated with his sons during the 1960s. Talks about the crayfish boom at the Chathams and the big demand for vessels. Mentions some of the problems encountered with the Marine Department surveyors and the modern fishing regulations. Talks about son, Harold, who has a boatbuilding business in Tory Channel in the Marlborough Sounds. Recalls leaving school and getting an apprenticeship as a car painter. Describes pay and conditions and becoming second-in-charge of Motor Assemblies in Christchurch. Mentions introduction of spray painting and decision to learn in Wellington, later moving to Motor Assemblies, building Dodge and Packard cars. Recalls being with Motor Assemblies, Christchurch when firm was founded. Discusses World War II, enlisting and being accepted for the Air Force and explains why he didn't go overseas. Discusses employment with Air Force (1941-1961), starting as a Fabric worker and explains details of fabricking, working on the Baffin, Tiger moth, Vampires and Harvards. Refers to passing exams and ending up as a Flight Sergeant. Describes involvement in air crash over the Waimakariri River, with reference to Dakota. Grandmother, Catherine Ann Hufnagel (nee Betham) came from village of Betham, Carnforth, South Westmoreland, England. Bethams (Beethams) emigrated to Australia, New Zealand, Samoa. Reference to Bruce Beetham (MP, Social Credit, 1978-1984) and Beethams of Wairarapa. Recalls childhood memories of big spaces, servants and hurricanes in Samoa and also of Queen Street, Auckland after the riots in 1930s. Gives history of Samoa.
