Developing library services: school libraries supporting learning - Primary

This course is for anyone new to a role in a primary school library—whether a librarian, a teacher with library responsibility, or a teacher aide. The course aims to build your competence and confidence to develop collections, services, and reading culture, and to link the library to the wider school and community. Please note, this course has been previously offered, in 2015 and 2016, under different titles.

This is an introductory online course for:

  • new primary school library staff
  • new members of the library management team

School level: primary / intermediate

Learning objectives

This course will enable you to:

  • build a broader understanding of your role and its scope in a primary school library
  • develop your library collection and services based on understanding your school community, your school's strategic priorities, and approaches used to support learners
  • play an active role in supporting a robust school-wide reading culture
  • locate information to support you in your role.

Course activities include:

  • practical activities and tasks, some requiring consultation within your school
  • opportunities to assess library practices within your own school
  • participating in a collaborative, problem-solving e-workshop related to the role of the library supporting reading in a primary school
  • personal reflection on your learning
  • opportunities to share and contribute, working in a Moodle environment, supported throughout by an e-facilitator.
