The school coordinator role is critical

Each school needs to appoint a loan coordinator (or coordinators) to take responsibility for ordering books and other resources from the Services to Schools team at the National Library.

  • Who may be a school loan coordinator

Each school can have up to 2 loan coordinators. It's likely that schools will choose their coordinator(s) from staff who are their:

    • school librarian
    • teacher with responsibility for the library, or
    • teacher with responsibility for literacy.

An important role supported by Services to Schools

Being a school loan coordinator is an opportunity to take a leadership role in resourcing curriculum and reading engagement teaching across your school. The role will also increase your knowledge of books that support student inquiry and reading engagement.

  • What a school loan coordinator does

The school loan coordinator is your school's central point of contact for ordering and managing books and resources from the National Library. The person in this role:

    • uses our online order form to request loans from the National Library on behalf of your school
    • liaises with Services to Schools staff to answer any enquiries about a loan request
    • coordinates whole-school loans
    • oversees the distribution and tracking of borrowed resources throughout the school
    • collects and returns books and resources to the National Library
    • is not personally liable for the loss of any books — their role is solely coordination.

  • Amount of time the role will take

This will vary depending on the approach you take and also the size of the school. A great loan requires great communication and coordination with your school staff.

    • In a small school, all staff may meet to decide what inquiry topics they're studying and the particular inquiry and reading engagement resources they require term by term.
    • In a larger school, you may give the task of collating teaching team orders to syndicate or faculty leaders. They can then feed these orders back to you to request as the school's whole-school loan.

As a guide, times when you're likely to be busy are when you're:

    • coordinating the whole-school loan leading up to the ordering period
    • receiving and distributing resources when they arrive
    • packaging and returning the resources at the end of the loan period.
