Description

Label purportedly from a tobacco plug box shows a central vertical oval portrait of Captain Cook, derived from the Nathaniel Holland portrait, showing Cook seated with a map on his lap, but also with dividers in his right hand. Outside of this oval centrepiece are four scenes from the Pacific: at top left a variation (probably from Webber) of the death of Captain Cook, at top right a sailing ship beside a headland; at lower left a sailing ship in mid-ocean, and at lower right a native couple and child.

The use of Cook on a tobacco label is in some ways appropriate in that tobacco was introduced to New Zealand during Cook's voyages.

Dating based on internet information that Sackett & Wilhelms used that name from 1889 onwards (previously Sackett, Wilhelms & Betzig).
