Description

Standing full length frontal portrait of Te Rangihaeata. He wears a flax cloak with taniko border, covered by a shorter dogskin cloak. He holds a patu in his right hand

Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Signed: C D Barraud N Z 1853. Title bottom left

Two later versions of this portrait held by the Alexander Turnbull Library, reference numbers B-004-021 and B-004-020. The portrait was also used to illustrate George Grey's Polynesian mythology (London, 1855) opposite page 191. Barraud used it as the basis for his lithograph 'Rangihaieta' published in New Zealand Graphic and Descriptive (London, 1877), Plate 2, no. 1
