- Hatton, Walter Scarlett, 1873-1938; Fuller, Alfred Walter Francis, 1882-1961
A large steel-framed bridge over a river, with a hill opposite with several houses
The date of this watercolour, six years before the bridge was built (1865), further upholds the view that Hatton's work is consistently copied from engravings in the Illustrated London News. An almost identical wood engraving was published in the Illustrated London news on October 12 1867, p. 405 (supplement). The wood engraving shows a group of men and women standing on the river bank near the bridge in the left foreground. These people are absent in Hatton's version.
A description of this bridge 576 ft long and 21 ft wide on the Tamaki River which is navigable by vessels of considerable size' is printed in the Illustrated London News, 12 October 1867 - 'Swing bridge gives clear opening of 40 ft., made with abutment stones imported from Melbourne and ironwork from Sydney. Designed by W Weaver, engineer-in-chief of Auckland Province; contractors McNeil and Wilson. Cost £17,000. Built 1865'.
