Shows a group seated on the ground in front of a thatched house on a tiered mound, with a central ladder to the front entrance.
Internet reports another copy of this postcard as dated 1904. See http://www.justpacific.com/fiji/fijiphotos/cards/fijians/houses.html. This site notes: "From the tiered motte or housemound it would appear that this is not in fact a chief's house, but Na Vata ni Tawake, originally a famous temple. ... a significant ceremonial occasion, judging not only from the formal dress of the people but more particularly from the assembled presentation goods: a stack of yams (ibinibini ni uvi) in the left foreground; a large vuniyaqona - the stump of a pepper plant (kava - Piper methysticum) in the centre foreground ..."
