Artist unknown :[Portrait of F. E. Maning? ca 1850]
- Date
- 1845 - 1855
- Reference
- G-331
- Description
Half-length frontal portrait supposedly of author and judge of the Native Land Court, Frederick Edward Maning. He is shown in young middle age, clean-shaven, with short curly hair and wearing a white cravat
There is some doubt about the identification of the subject as F. E. Maning. The facial features do not appear strong enough, although the short curly hair and his being clean-shaven before his older age are appropriate. The painting was acquired as a portrait of Maning, but the provenance of the work before acquisition by the Library is not known for sure. There is some suggestion that the subject may be the father of F E Maning, Frederick Maning senior
