Consists of a small amount of correspondence, 1906-1913; diary entries, with gaps, Jan 1913-Jan 1917; notebooks, dated 1881-1912, six of which are labelled McL 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8 respectively, containing entries relating to specific birds and egg and feather finds and various bird-watching trips including many to Cape Kidnappers, Tutira and other areas in Poverty Bay and Hawkes Bay and one to Stewart Island and loose notes also relating to specific birds and to trips; newspaper clippings of columns and articles relating to natural science and history and to ornithology, 1888-1916 and copies of articles written by McLean.

John Chambers McLean was educated at Nelson College and then farmed Waitohu Station, Poverty Bay in partnership with his father. He was a keen ornithologist, belonged to many ornithological and related societies and published in `Ibis', the journal of the Zoological Society of London. He drowned in 1918 while attempting to cross the Waipaoa River.
