Mentioned in James Cowan's book \"The Maoris of New Zealand\" (1910), p 68: \"The anchor or mooring stone of the Tainui is on the beach close to the Mokau settlement. It is a peculiarly shaped, grooved and polished rock, something like an hour-glass in outline and about 4 feet in length\".
