William James Harding founded his studio in Wanganui in 1856. In 1889 he sold it to Alfred Martin, who had previously practiced in Christchurch. During his tenure, Harding occasionally hired out his studio to other photographers, and there are images in the 1/4 plate sequence which the Library also holds as cartes-de-visite by the photographers D Thomson and T Tuffin. Alfred Martin sold the business to Frank Denton in 1899. Denton in turn sold out to Mark Lampe around 1930, but retained Harding's negatives, and Martin's 10x8 and 10x12 negatives, himself.
Quantity: 6561 b&w original negative(s).
Provenance: The negatives were made by the studio of William James Harding, Wanganui, which operated from 1856 to 1889. The studio passed to Alfred Martin, and then to F J Denton, who retained Harding's negatives after selling the studio to Mark Lampe.
