Description

Seated frontal portrait to below the waist, of painter Nugent Welch, wearing a brown suit, brown felt hat, blue striped shirt, blue tie with red paisley-pattern shapes. In his left hand he holds a paintbox, and in his right hand a brush.

Also known as "Painter (1877-1970)" in the catalogue of the Paris Salon, 1971, where it won a gold medal with five other portraits.

The subject was Mitchell's tutor in watercolours at Wellington Technical College School of Art, and remained a close friend until Mitchell left for Holland in 1960.
