- Description
Ruhia, daughter-in-law of Rira Porutu, paramount chief of Ngati Awa at Thorndon, wearing the kakahu (cloak) which she had thrown over Thomas Wilmor McKenzie and another boy, shortly after their arrival in Wellington as orphans in 1840, to protect them from being killed by Rira Porutu after they had inadvertently strayed on to a tapu site.
Gottfried Lindauer painted Mrs Porutu (Ruhia) in 1877, in Wellington (Information from MSX-3092 (Lindauer family: Papers relating to Gottfried Lindauer)
