Description

People survey the debris in the street outside the Caledonian Hotel in Hastings Street, Napier, shortly after the earthquake of 1931. The Cafe Savoy can be seen on the far left. Photographed by James Henry Daroux.

A print of this image is in album PA1-f-145, page 11 with the following caption: "62. Napier Caledonian Hotel. Stood up well but badly cracked. Appears unsafe." A note on the opposite page reads: "Still standing 1985. Canopy removed. Verandah added. Structually sound."
