Description

Four head and shoulder portrait of inhabitants of Pacific Islands, namely Manila, the Philippines, New Zealand and the Caroline Islands.

The tattooed New Zealand head is a copy of a self-portrait wooden bust carved by Hongi Hika in 1814. The bust is in Auckland Museum. It was published earlier in The missionary register (1816, p.524) and in Craik, G L. The New Zealanders (London, 1830, p. 147)

A first state, with the top left figure lacking a pendant on the chain she wears, the bottom right figure with three ornaments in his hair.
