Steve O'Shea, biological curator with NIWA Research, working on a giant squid. The female squid is ten metres long and weighs 300 kilograms. It was caught by the Ministry of Fisheries Scientific Observer Programme, near Mernoo Bank. Photographed 11 February 1998 by Evening Post staff photographer Craig Simcox.
