N class steam locomotive, NZR 34, 2-6-2 type.
Between 1886 and 1905

No 34, an N class steam locomotive, 2-6-2 type at a railways workshop, probably Petone. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber before it was fitted with piston valves, which took place in 1905.

N class NZR 34, was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, went into service in November 1885, and was written off in 1933. See "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" by W G Lloyd, and "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart.
