Fell railways

The Fell System was a mountain railway traction system, designed and patented by English engineer John Barraclough Fell (1815-1902), for mountain railways. It employed the friction between a wheel of the specially designed locomotives and an additional central rail along the track to enable a train to climb a steep incline. The Rimutaka Incline was the only commercially successful application of the system in the world. See "The railways of New Zealand : a journey through history" (p 153-157), by Geoffrey B Churchman & Tony Hurst (Ref P ATL NZ q385 CHU 2001)
