Three-quarters length standing portrait of Ernest Rutherford, his left hand on a pile of books, and a retort to his left. Copy of an original held by the Royal Society, London.
A replica of a 1934 painting by Oswald Birley held by the Royal Society, London.
A further copy of this work, possibly by a later New Zealand artist, is held by the University of Canterbury.
Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Oswald Birley. Also a brass plaque attached to the frame, bottom centre, with title, artist and date and the statement that the work is a replica of one held by the Royal Institution, London. The first copy is held by the Royal Society, not the Royal Institution

Provenance: Originally presented to New Zealand by Governor-General Lord Bledisloe as a parting gift in 1935, and shown at the National Art Gallery's inaugural exhibition, 1936.
