Moutoa Island

Site of a battle on 14 May 1864. Pai Mārire supporters were defeated by Māori defending the Whanganui township. Moutoa Gardens were named after this battle and the Moutoa flag was created by local Whanganui women and was presented to the Māori defenders.

Two clean copies and one copy with annotations (by Anderson?) of the 'Battle of Moutoa Island, May 14 1864' booklet published by the Moutoa Centennial Committee in 1964. Accompanying this booklet is manuscript of a Māori "chant sung by Pehi Turoa, when he came down river in canoe pleading with people to let him land; and was abused and pelted with refuse".
