Whanganui

Petre, Wanganui

The New Zealand Company named the town Petre after one of its directors, but in 1854 the name was changed to Wanganui after the Whanganui River. In 2010 the spelling of the name changed to Whanganui to reflect the correct meaning of the name (large harbour)
