New Edinburgh
Māori name is Ōtepoti. It was originally intended that the new Otago town should be called "New Edinburgh" but at the suggestion of publisher (Sir) William Chambers, then Provost of Edinburgh, it was called Dunedin (Dun Edin) meaning "Edin on the Hill", the original Celtic name of Edinburgh (Edin Burgh, "Edwin's Town") which was named after Edwin (c585-633), King of Northumbria from 617.
