Patrician (Ship)

Steel schooner of 166 tons, built at Carrickfergus in 1887. Wrecked in August 1896, her crew being rescued by the SS Fifeshire. The wreck and rescue took place south of New Caledonia and half-way between New Zealand and Australia.

Description: Painting of a storm, with the crew of the sailing ship "Patrician" being rescued by the SS "Fifeshire", on 28 August 1896. Painting by E B Hayward, probably photographed by David Alexander De Maus. No information given as to the whereabouts of the original painting. This photograph is almost identical to Neg. 1/1-002139-b, which has no photographer's inscription, but which has images of the captains of the two ships imposed on the painting above the relevant ships. Note on envelope: Dup. 1/2 neg also (Variation) Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom centre - "British pluck." Crew of the "Patrician" rescued by SS "Fifeshire". Aug 28, 1896.
