Ryan, Darby, 1864-1927, Ryan, Thomas Aldworth, 1864-1927, Ryan, Tom, 1864-1927

Sportsman, artist, master mariner. He was a member of the New Zealand rugby team which visited Australia in 1884. Artist and photographer of the Central North Island. Commonly known as Darby Ryan, he was the son of Mary Ryan and Charles Aldworth. Known by his mother's surname. See DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p437-438). He married Mere (Mary) Wharipapa, daughter of Kamariera te Wharepapa. There is a suggestion that he may have accompanied Laurence Cussen on surveying trips in the central North Island in the early 1880s (See AT 13/14/1, 20 September 2002).
