Daughter of Kotiro Hinerangi and her second husband William Lord. Married Te Mahuki, from the Wanganui area, in the early 1860s, and the couple worked as guides for Von Tempsky; he was possibly killed in action on 14 January 1866, soon after Von Tempsky's last painting of him in a group portrait (7 January 1866). Lucy continued to work for Von Tempsky until his death in 1868. Using the name Louisa Grey, she married Joseph Edwin Dalton in 1878. Mrs D'Alton was guide to Lieut-Colonel Thomas McDonnell in 1868. The Book of New Zealand Women" edited by Charlotte Macdonald et al, 1991, states that she was also known as Wikitoria of Nukumaru. According to information on the back of carte-de-visite PA2-2559 she had a sister named Karana?/Karaana?/Karona?/Karoona?/Caroline? who also fought on the West Coast. Information on the back of carte-de-visite PA2-2830 states she also had a sister named Mata or Martha. Caption in "The Colonial New Zealand Wars" by Tim Ryan and Bill Parham, 1986, page 154 reads: " 'Queen Victoria' (Takiroa) of the Nukumaru tribe. This woman warrior fought for the Government, and guided Generals Cameron and Chute during their West Coast campaigns. She was said to be the first to enter Weraroa Pa.". Takiora was also a prolific correspondent to Donald McLean regarding the movements of Maori fighting against colonial troops during the New Zealand Wars specifically about Taranaki, Waikato and Parihaka.
