Paape, Arthur Albert, 1878-1948

Trade unionist, Reform Party candidate, publican and collector of early NZ and Australian editions. Born in Ballarat Vic; came to Dunedin 1897; Secretary of Southland Sawmillers' Union 1900-1906; Secretary of a number of other Southland unions until 1911; travelled with Tom Mann through Australasia 1902; Secretary of an employers' association 1911; secretary for NZ Sports Protection League 1911; organiser for Reform Party 1913; stands for Reform Party in Westland 1914; landlord of Waverley Hotel, Auckland 1916, and later of Grand Hotel, Dunedin (from around 1918-1940s).
