King, Marcus, 1891-1983

Artist and architect. Born in Manaia, Taranaki. His family moved to Tapanui, Southland in 1900. Was living in Wellington by 1906 when he joined the Public Works Department on a junior cadetship in the architectural division. In the same year, moved to Auckland, where he met and befriended the Swedish artist Edward Fristrom who was a big influence on his painting. Returned to Wellington in 1915. Served in World War I, then returned to the Civil Service. He was an original member of the Quoin Club, Auckland. Also began commercial art work for advertising agencies. Attached to the Publicity Branch of the National Film Unit 1930-1960. He retired to Nelson and then to Waikanae. See biographical interview in NZ Biographies 1976, volume 3, page 55. Date of death confirmed in BDM index, which states that he died in Levin. Photograph in "Mirror", October 1953, page 8.
