Writer and journalist. Born Gateshead, Durham. In 1880 the family migrated to New Zealand. His father joined the New Zealand Insurance Co, and in 1884 was transferred to Brisbane. His family returned to New Zealand 1892. Worked briefly as a clerk in the Wellington office of the USSCo; then at National Provident Society. Began writing poetry, inspired by Henry Lawson; 'Stokin' published in the Sydney Bulletin 7 Jul 1900, under the pseudonym 'Quilp N'. His first collection of verse, The Red West Road, appeared in Wellington 1903. In 1905 married Vera Willis. Moved to Sydney 1912. Wrote for Sydney Bulletin and the Lone Hand. During World War I returned to New Zealand to write for various newspapers, then worked as a publicity officer and compiled tourist guides. Joined Smith's Weekly in Sydney in 1923. Also toured in USA and East Asia. Wrote first novel in 1935, becoming a freelance writer shortly after. Active member and State secretary of the Fellowship of Australian Writers. He was a heavy drinker and in 1942 his wife left him. Rehabilitated by Henry Lawson's widow Bertha. Wrote a biography My Henry Lawson (Sydney, 1943). Lawson lived with Bertha until her death in 1957. He died a few months later.
