Orlando HMS (Ship)

Built by the Palmer Shipbuilding Co at Jarrow-on-Tyne, HMS Orlando was launched in 1888. 5,600 tons displacement, 8,500 horse-power. She was an armoured cruiser with two screws and was the brand new flagship of six vessels of the Australian Squadron of the Royal Navy which visited New Zealand in 1889. The other Ships were Calliope, Opal, Lizard, Rapid, and Raven. HMS Orlando served with the Australian Squadron from July 1888 to December 1897. In 1889, she was damaged during a confrontation with German Navy ships bombarding settlements on the Northern Australian coast.
