Wellington Central Library
First building occupied corner of Mercer and Wakefield Streets. Designed in 1890. Built 1891 to 1893. Opened 1893. It originally had a corner tower which was removed in 1894. Architect, William Chrichton. Second building is now occupied by the Wellington City Art Gallery (1997) and faces the new Civic Square. Originally this building faced Mercer Street which ran between it and the Town Hall. It was built between 1935 when the site was cleared and ca 1940. It was selected from an architectural competition also held in 1935. Two winners were chosen, one for the best interior planning, and one for the best exterior appearance.
