Holmwood, John, 1910-1987

Artist, born in Wellington. Studied and taught at Wellington Technical College. In 1924, at age 14, he joined NZ Railways Advertising Studios, working on painting big railway hoardings. In 1938 he left Railways to work for an advertising agency (taking over from Russell Clark). During World War 2 he was with a camouflage unit in Tonga and Fiji. Painted in Auckland after the war, and his works were regularly bought by Auckland Art Gallery. Involved in running a display studio with his wife, preparing window displays for shops. Painted many murals in Auckland. Also showed with Architectural Centre Gallery in Wellington. For many years associated with Auckland Society of Arts and was its President for some time. Went to live in England after the death of his wife, Nola. Several paintings of English scenes dated 1974 offered at auction at International Art Centre, Auckland, July 2005, lots 67 to 71. Failing eyesight stopped him painting in 1976. A retrospective show was held by the Auckland Society of Arts in 1984 - See John Holmwood, 30 years of his painting by Alexa Johnston in Art New Zealand, No. 31. John Holmwood returned to New Zealand to attend this exhibition. He died in Bristol, England on 15 March 1987. See obituary in Art New Zealand, 44, Spring 1987, p. 46 and mention on p 52.
