Nicoll, Archibald Frank, 1886-1953

Artist, art teacher, and Director of the Canterbury School of Art. See DNZB (Vol 4, 1921-1940, p380-381, N10). See also Archibald Nicoll by Neil Roberts. (Christchurch, Robert McDougall Art Gallery, 2000). Painted mainly in oils, landscapes and portraits. Born Lincoln, Canterbury, 14 June 1886, educated Christchurch Boys' High School and Canterbury College School of Art. Taught art at Elam School of Art and Design, 1908-1911, visiting England and Scotland 1911-1914, arriving back in New Zealand in September 1914. Departed for Europe with the 4th NZEF June 1915. Wounded at the battle of the Somme and had his leg amputated October 1916. Returned to Wellington, March 1918 and taught at Wellington Technical College until September 1919. He began receiving commissions for portraits in oils in 1918. In April 1920 he took up a new position as Director of the Canterbury College School of Art.
