Knox, Uchter John Mark, 5th Earl of Ranfurly, 1856-1933, Ranfurly, Lord, 1856-1933

15th Governor of New Zealand (1897-1904). Became Earl on the death of his older brother in 1875. Educated at Harrow and Cambridge; lived some years in Australia, fruit-growing in Victoria and visiting New Zealand in 1888. Lord-in-waiting to Queen Victoria 1895-1897. In New Zealand was a popular Governor, touring and taking an active part in local affairs. Presented the Ranfurly shield for rugby, founded a veteran's home in Auckland, and was involved in annexation of the Cook Islands and Niue. Married Constance Elizabeth Caulfield 1880.
