Nias, Joseph (Capt), 1793-1879

Born London. Joined Royal Navy 1807; at the seige of Cadiz 1810; on various naval stations 1810-1815. On HMS `Alexander' with Sir William Parry for the Ross Arctic expedition 1818 and in the Arctic on HMS `Hecla' 1821-1823. First Lieutenant of HMS `Asia` 1826; made Commander 1827. With HMS `Herald', East Indies station 1838. Carried Captain Hobson to New Zealand in HMS `Herald' Feb 1840 and was involved with the Treaty signing at Waitangi. Served in the First Chinese War. Superintendent of the Victualling Yard and Hospital at Plymouth 1854-1856. Rear Admiral 1857, Vice Admiral 1863, KCB 1867, Admiral 1867. Married Caroline Isabella Laing 1855; 2 sons, 3 daughters.
