New Zealand Shipping Company Ltd.

NZSCo

Incorporated in 1873 in Christchurch, New Zealand, with shareholders limited to New Zealanders. The company began its trading by purchasing four iron ships (Waitara, Waimea, Mataura, Rangitiki). In 1880, financial control was transferred to London. In 1912, the company, by taking a controlling interest in the Federal Steam Navigation Company, gained entry into the Australian trade. The company was taken over by P&O in 1917, but still traded under its own name with its own fleet. In the early 1960s the company with its subsidiaries Federal Steam Navigation Co Ltd and Avenue Shipping Co Ltd, operated a fleet of 38 cargo vessels and four modern cargo passenger ships: Rangitane, Rangitoto, Remuera and Ruahine. At that time the company maintained a regular passenger service to the UK. The advent of the container ship and the development of air travel presaged the company's full absorption into the General Cargo Division of P&O in 1971.
