Stack, James West (Rev), 1835-1919

Missionary, clergyman, writer, interpreter, artist. Son of the missionary James Stack 1801-1883. Born Puriri, Thames, educated St John's College, Auckland and Sydney College, returning to New Zealand in 1856. Employed by Church Missionary Society, ordained Dec 1860 by Bishop Harper; minister at Tuahiwi, Duvauchelles, Kaiapoi and Fendalton (all Canterbury). Married Eliza Rachel Jane Jones in Jan 1861; after 1898 lived in Italy. Father of six children: Katherine, Herbert, Maurice Tancred, Mary, Alan Montressor and Dorathea Margaret Louisa (1876-1911?). Died Worthing, England. Manuscript autobiography held in McNab Collection, Dunedin Public Library. See DNZB (1990, Vol 1, 1769-1869, p403-404). His collection, held in the Manuscripts & Archives and Drawings & Prints Collections, was donated by descendants in March 1934.
